Mercedes Engine and Transmission I.D. Numbers
I get asked all the time about where to locate the engine and transmission ID number. Well on the 4 and 5 cylinder engine and trannys its real easy. Why do you need these numbers? Well often times getting the correct part depends on which engine or transmission range your particular unit falls into. I snapped some pics of where to find these important numbers.
This is the series of numbers you will find on your block. Located on the drivers side right below the head.
You will usually need a can of brake cleaner, paper towels and a strong flashlight to read the stamped numbers.
Here is what they look like when the is nothing in the way and the numbers are not full of oil and dirt.
This is a 617 turbo 5 cylinder, model 952, 1 = left hand drive, 2 =Automatic Tranny, 013,703 is the serial number.
The tranny numbers are located on the passenger side of the case right above the pan. The most important part of the number scheme is the 722.118. Necessary when you need tranny parts. 722 means automatic, 1 means 4 speed 4 bolt pan, the 18 means the type of auto or version number. The 056971 is the serial number.
