"Just bought a 1985 W123 300D
Turbo diesel with about 220,000 miles.
Its was a little noisy, shaky, and smokey.
Bought your diesel purge kit with jar and hoses and it worked great.
Engine is running smother. Also bought your valve adjusting wrenches and
plan to do that soon. I
would also like to replace the glow plugs. Car
still smokes a bit. Maybe the valve adjustment will help. If it
still smokes after valve adjustment, wondering if replacing the valve
stem seals is a good idea? Doesn't
look like too difficult a job.
Any recommendations on that for an engine
with 220,000 miles and do you have a kit and/or procedure?"
Thanks" J.C.
"I found your site by accident and
i am impressed with the tutorials. i will soon (5 days) be given a badly
neglected but nice to look at 300CD. i have a question i hope you can
clear up for me. the trans is a 3-speed auto but all the parts stores list
two completely different filters for it. all the web sites i visit also
list two different ones. If I look at the pan gaskets they are
completely different one square and one with "detents" in the
middle on the sides. Any information you could give me to narrow it down
so I don't have to do the job twice would be appreciated. Thank you
in advance for your help and again your site is an excellent source.
sincerely A.F."
"Hey, I just found your site when i was
looking for the lubro molly purge product on line. And your site is GREAT!! I
really appreciate all the pictorals on the mercedes fixes! I got a 87 300sdl in
november that i'm converting to run on veggie oil, a friend recommended that i
do the purge and i'm excited to get in there and do some work on my car. i
traditionally have never been a "car guy," I just got in my little 4
cylinder japanese cars and drove em till they broke, but i'm turning over a new
leaf with the idea of burning a fuel that I can get from restaurants for free.
And certainly my new ride has it's share of problems, so i'm psyched to find
your site. One question.. when I do the lubro molly purge, then change the
fuel filters, how do I PRIME the fuel line? You mentioned that in the
directions, but i'm not sure what's involved in that. thanks!
And like I said, you're site is awesome
and makes me even more excited about being a diesel owner and getting
under the hood to work on this puppy. I wish I were in Georgia though,
it's frickin' cold up here right now!!
thanks again! M."
"Hi Russell, Again, Thank you very much for your
expertise.
I removed the door panel and found the
locking rod rubbing against the door handle rod causing a very fine
tension spring attached to the locking rod where it slides up and down
was broken. I made a (back yard mechanic), spring from a small fine
spring, and behold everything works great.
Again, MANY THANKS. Us retired people living

us old timers, your expert advice. Restoring this old clunker is a

"Hi Russell, Thank
you ever so much for all the information and advice. I received the glow

injectors at the same time. Thanks again for your time."

useful information on you site and appreciate you. I did do something

what I should do if anything for the kerosene problem?" Thanks A.

"Hi Russell, I love your tutorial on how to replace the timing chain on the Mercedes
5 cylinder diesel....Thank you" M
"First I would like to take the time to
say that your web page is one of the
most informative I have ever seen. It is
great with a capital G.
My 18 year old son purchased a 1977 240D
and he loves it one of the problems it has is the odometer isn't
working. I took the dash apart (before reading your web page ,, would
have saved quite a bit of time) and the problem was that small plastic
gear shown in the picture. Do you sell the gears to repair. I would like
to order that and the deluxe purge kit."

"My 1996 Dodge Cummins transmission was shifting all over the
place especially when cold, I did a search on the internet for
transmission problems and came across your site about the tps
adjustment, being a “cheap guy” I decided to try it and the
adjustment worked awesomely, if that’s a word, thanks a lot and you
saved me a lot of time and money!"

Nice
website. My name is J. and I'm an avid

vehicles....."Have a nice Christmas.J. C.
"Thanks Russell. I had the valves
adjusted today. Boy did they need it. On the first two cyls couldn't get
a feeler between the cam and the valve stem. Much better now. Also, I
found out the nuts holding the turbo to the exhaust manifold weren't
even on the studs. Got em replaced. Makes a good difference.
Looking forward to getting that block heater kit installed. Going to NY
on either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Gets cold up there.
Thanks for your help." D. T.
"Hi Russell, thanks again for the help yesterday w/ the priming
procedure. I ordered some fuel lines from you and I am in need of more
stuff. Thanks" B.B.
"Thanks Russell. I also just found that you have added a thermostat
pictorial to your page, how awesome! You mentioned several times on there
about using Mercedes coolant..... Thanks a lot for all of your tips and
your great site. You explain everything so well, it really inspires to get
out there and fix a bunch of things." S.

"Thanks for your help on your web
site, I was able to troubleshoot my glow plug system and it works fine. I
wanted to ask if you have any more repair tips that you may have for the
car or a repair manual that I can buy. Also, I am going to work on my ac
system since the mercedes I bought has a frozen compressor. I was going to
buy the synthetic oil that you recommended but wanted to ask you something
about it. I went to my local supply house and they tried to talk me out of
using synthetic. They stated that the synthetic is corrosive to the older
hoses and system and will cause damage. Is this correct? Also, since the
compressor was frozen and there is a potential for loose debris in the
system, should I replace the condensor. Is the condensor able to be
flushed effectively. The old owner stated his ac shop said the condensor
needed to be replaced.
Again, thanks for your help, wish you
had more tips on your web site." T. B.
"Russell, Wow, I had never know
about your site. You do great guides! You're my
kinda guy. Somebody else pointed it out
that in between our two sites,
there isn't really much more than a DIY
could ask for. That's how I
found out about your site. If it's okay
with you, ....... So yeah, cool. thanks" D.
"Hey there, First of all, I want to say I appreciate your web site. I
just bought a 1980 merc 240D. I have seen at least three of your articles
that I will be following along with to make repairs. Your sense of humor
and excellent pictures make it seem like I can really do this.
I am just down the road, in stone mountain/Clarkston area. I am definitely
interested in biodiesel for 1.80/gal. The only reason I bought this car
was to convert it to SVO/WVO. I would really like to have bio diesel in
the main tank instead of dinosaur bones. Especially if it is 1.80/gal. I
have to repair a few things first... wheel bearing, motor mounts, brake
lines, valve adjust, rear dif lube and so on, not too bad unless I planned
on having a merc mechanic do it all. Then I would be in trouble.
Do you have bio diesel now? Let me know, I didn’t find your site till
last night and I have been all over the place looking for sites like
yours. I have several friends that would make a habit of filling up with
you if possible.
I also wanted to talk to you about my conversion to WVO. See what
you though about the components I am planning to use. I will try to give
you a call tomorrow. Thanks again, hope I can fill up at your place."

shop next time I fly out to see the Auburn Tigers.
Thank you," S. M.
"Russel, Hi, my name is Kevin
Norris and I live in Talladega, AL. I've really enjoyed your
dieselgiant.com website and it has given me the confidence to start
looking for a MB diesel to run homebrew WVO biodiesel. I'm just getting
started on the biodiesel project...
Thanks again for the great site, it was
just what I'm looking for. I'm on the benzworld.org forums as KBlair
asking these same questions. Sincerely," K. N.
"Hi
Russell, great website! I enjoyed checking it out as im a diesel head of
over 20 years. I have had many Mercedes diesels over the years but kept my
180D which im working on these days. I have a 1984 Mazda B2200 diesel and
a 2000 Golf TDI which runs well when the MAFs arent going bad. I too run
the Amsoil but in the Golf only and use the 3000 series. I was wondering
if you knew a source for a new radiator for my B2200? The years are
1982-84 only. Im in CT and have found none as they are mostly gone here
from salt but was wondering if suppliers in your area would have them
listed? I may end up recoring it. Do you ever get any Mazda diesels for
sale? I used to have a Jeep CJ6 with a Perkins diesel and shouldnt have
sold it. Thanks again for your help." Regards. J.
"Russel,
I just finished
installing new vacuum valve levers per your instructions and it made a BIG

Enjoy your web site. It has some good info I was

"hey Russell , the lubro molly purge worked out great, I
replaced the fuel fliters too and everything is fantastic. the car has
noticeably more power and less noise!! WOW!!
thanks again. I really liked the pre-fabbed juice bottle. this was my
first car repair type of thing i've done on the benz and it felt great to do it!
i'm getting ready to install a veggie oil conversion so i figured this was a
good time to do the purge!

Russell-
I just bought a 1985 Mercedes 300SD from a friend who is a doctor. The car
is in great shape. I got it for 10 bucks!! I am planning on a large
order from you soon. I was planning the extreme
kit. fuel injector line kit, hose replacement kit, Transmission valve kit,
and maybe a 10 pack of prefilters.
Do you have tank screens? It LOOKS like the fuel hose unscrews from the
screen, and the screen would just then unscrew from the tank. I plan on
just dumping the fuel that is in the car. It's not that it is bad... I
just
drove the car a few weeks ago (it mostly just sits at his summer home in
Maine) so it's in running shape.. I just think the old diesel was out of
sight, out of mind for preventative stuff.
For the record... I am buying everything I can from you simply because of
the time and care you put into having such a great website. It is very
good
of you to provide repair information like that for free.
Thanks

That is an impressive set of
directions you have constructed regarding the "diesel purge" as
well as your other work sheets.
The 1982 Mercedes C D looks good, what kind of
price are you thinking of when it arrives in your yard?
I was disappointed to hear that you didn't like
190 D's. Other than the odometers stop working, the window motors
go and anything other than a 5 cylinder is slower than molasses, what
else goes wrong? (A manual transmission helps a little.)
190 D's have good diesel engine sound
encapsulation and a 5 link rear suspension, both developed for the 190
and continued in succeeding years. (A couple of good points.)
Diesel less H. in Seminole, Florida.

Hi,
Great
website. I hope to tackle the valve adjustment and other tasks on my 79
Mercedes 240D using your info. When the time comes, I'll try to support
your website for parts. With your pictures and text, I'm much more
likely to try the work myself.
I bought the
car about 6 months ago from the original owner with about 330K miles.
I'm checking old paperwork to see when the timing chain was last done.
I bought an
Elsbett single tank system a month ago but want to get the car running well
before installing. It comes with new glow plugs and controller and
injector nozzles along with an electric fuel pump and some hoses.
I replaced the
cigar hose, injector return lines and fuel tank line before getting the
Elsbett kit. Thanks to your website, I see there are a couple more I
will have to replace.
Unfortunately,
when my fuel level is less than half a tank, the engine will die while driving
as if air is getting in?). The first time, I bled the system at the
injectors. The 2nd time I played with the starter and throttle and
finally got it going, after trying the fuel priming pump (which leaks so I'll
have to try one of your repairs on that, too).
The oil and
fuel fitlers were changed a few months ago. The clear in-line filter
looks good with clear fuel.
Does this
sound like a loose hose connection or could there be a clogged fuel pump or
screen in the tank? Is there a pump in the tank?
I didn't use
teflon tape or any kind of crush washer on the new hose fitting to the bottom
of the tank.
Any ideas will
be appreciated.
Thanks,
D.
Hi Russel,
thanks for the great pictorial. It ended
up being the fuse. I still tested the glowplugs, all were within spects.
now for the next question, I disconnected the battery when I was replacing the
fuse and like a dummy, I didnt keep power to the radio and now it has the
lines in the display. How do I get the thing to work, or do I have to go
to the dealer with the vin # etc.??
thanks again. K.
First off your site is very informative thanks
!!!. i have a 96 E300D running wvo for over
12k .first of all im buying the large vac kit plz include the
black and blue check valve the goes to the aux. vac pump . so my problem is
this my variable resonance valve is intermittent . it get vac
on the in side but its not getting electrically activated and when it
does its only for like 5 min max . this still happen on diesel
as well . im guessing its another sensor that is telling comp to tweek
what do you think? N.J.
Thanks
Russell, that's what I thought. Your dyi on adjusting the valves is great.
Thanks again.

Hi Russell,
I love your tutorial on how to replace the timing chain on the Mercedes 5
cylinder diesel. As far as the press goes, do you have the part number for
the press? I have a maintenance CD, but it says nothing about timing chain
replacement and I don't know where to get that part number. There is one
locally for sale, but I'm not sure if it's the right one or not. Any help
in giving me a way to identify the correct tool would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Mic.

Hello my friend. You seem to be very knowlegable about these trucks. I just
bought a little 84 2wd d50 turbo diesel and I thought I was a good mechanic
tell I bought this.......took me an hour to find the batery:) lol
I had a couple of questions for you that maybe you can help with. This
truck has heavy black smoke under a low end load and by the time I hear/feel
the turb come on it is time to shift? I think my pump is giving me the corect
fuel for a good running turbo but my turbo isn't pressuring the cylinders
enough to burn the fiel and keep up with the pump. Do you know whre I can get
a rebuild kit for the turbo? What is the turbo on the truck stock? Is it
a common turbo used on other cars? Can i just upgrade to a bigger turbo? What
off of?
Someone has done a glow plug relay bypass so now you push and hold a button
to warm them. I am going to put new plugs in this weekend and check
compression to see how this motor is before i get started. I have found about
everthing to freshen the motor up except pistons and rings. What is good
compression for this motor?
If I decide to go with a bigger turbo, do you know where i can find info on
turning up the injection pump pressure?
Thanks a Million in advance for any help,
R. C.
Russel
Great tutorial on how to replace the
timeing chain on the MB 5 cyl diesel. I have a question, where in the
world to I get that chain press? I've called all of the auto parts
stores around that rent tools and they don't have anything like that. Is
using a small anvil and a ball peen hammer that bad of an idea to flare out
the master link pin? If you know where I can get the press I'll
certainly get it.
Thanks,
M.
I just wanted to let you know that I was able to fix a vacuum line on my

HELLO, RUSSELL,
JUST WANT TO SAY THANKS FOR THE TIPS ON THE MB ENGINES. I USED THE DIESEL
PURGE WITH SUCCESS. THE CAR WENT FROM BLACK SMOKE TO SOME WHITE SMOKE AT
START-UP.
I HAVE A QUESTION, ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION VACUUM VALVE ON MY 116 ENGINE, 1979 SD
TURBO. DOES THIS HAVE THE PLASTIC FLIPPERS THAT YOU HAVE SHOWN IN YOUR
DEMONSTRATION ON YOUR 1984? IF NOT, CAN THIS BE EASILY CHANGED OUT?
THANKS AGAIN,
D. W.
Hi
Russel,
Thanks for all your help the other day on mercedesshop.com. You responded to
my thread, and I found that I do have some vacuum issues.
I have a 1984 300SD. I have no vacuum to the line that goes to the
transmission. I checked the things you told me to, and boiled it down to the
3/2 vacuum valves......

Russell,
THanks for your
help this morning regarding the 84 300d that wants to run and run.
When I got home
a half an hr ago, after 45 min of highway driving, I tried to kill it using
the same method, detaching the rod to the injector pump, and giving it a
yank. THis would not kill it. There is something that seems
to cycles (heater?) that seems to put the engine under load, because I
could hear it click and the idle would decrease, click off and the idle
increased. I waited for a load cycle, gave the rod a yank and
it shut off.
Is it possible
the solenoid that is being moved by the rod is bound up somehow? is
this fixable? It appears that there rod going down beside the IP
connects to another that comes up the back of the IP (toward the
firewall) which connects to something else.
Anyway, its' a
mystery, thanks for any help you can give,
K. T.
Your information on vacuum leaks was very helpful to a chap in nova scotia
canada!
Keep up the good work! I will contact later for parts

My
1996 Dodge Cummins transmission was shifting all over the place especially
when cold, I did a search on the internet for transmission problems and came
across your site about the tps adjustment, being a “cheap guy” I decided
to try it and the adjustment worked awesomely, if that’s a word, thanks a
lot and you saved me a lot of time and money!
Thanks
again,
C.
Thanks
for the great kit. It made a huge difference on the shifting of my 83 300SD.

Hi Russell
I just found your website today, and I wanted to tell you Thanks for all
the info and hard work you have done.
the site is very very user friendly and information that I needed (actually
it provided me with more info than I needed)
Thanks again
J.
Hello Russell,
I found your site on the internet and was impressed with your passion for
diesels. I am looking for a used diesel work truck. I have found a used 1997
dodge diesel Ram, regular cab 8ft box, which would fit my needs. I am retiring
a 1984 chev 6.2 diesel which is just plain wore out. I have resurrected this
truck from the dead so many times my wife calls it old lazereth!......I noted
on your web site about steering arm replacement for dodges. Is this not a
matter of when but how soon? Have you noted a problem with the Ram trucks
wandering on the road?
I know the Cummins diesel is almost bullet proof but, don't want a truck
that wanders on the road.
I would appreciate hearing your opinion.
R. P.
Hi Russell. How are
you doing?
Nice website.
My name is J. and I'm an avid car nut. I'm especially interested in Diesel
powered vehicles.....
Have a nice Christmas.
J. C.
Thanks Russell.
I had the valves adjusted today. Boy did they need it. On the first two
cyls couldn't get a feeler between the cam and the valve stem. Much better
now. Also, I found out the nuts holding the turbo to the exhaust manifold
weren't even on the studs. Got em replaced.
Makes a good difference.
Looking forward to getting that block heater kit installed. Going to NY on
either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Gets cold up there.
Thanks for your help.
D. T.
Hi Russell, thanks again for the help yesterday w/ the priming
procedure. I ordered some fuel lines from you and I am in need of more
stuff. I have an oil leak and it seems to be coming out of what looks like
something to do w/ the turbo. It has a round base and is mounted on the
front left side of the motor. It has a steel line going to the brake
booster. I am pretty sure that oil is coming from the seal between the
block and this. I would like to replace it. I also had sent another email
re: other fuel line replacements. Can you let me know what I need and how
much.
Thanks, B.B.
Thanks Russell. I also just found that you have added a thermostat
pictorial to your page, how awesome! You mentioned several times on
there about using Mercedes coolant. I am currently using 50/50 (water
and Prestone coolant). Is it super essential to use Mercedes brand?
Thanks a lot for all of your tips and your great site. You explain
everything so well, it really inspires to get out there and fix a
bunch of things.
S.
Hi Diesel Giant,
I have enjoyed your website and your
contributions on mercedesshop.com
Thanks, R.A.
Hi, Diesel Giant.
Thanks again for all your tips and the vacuum lever
replacement really helped my transmission's shifting.
P.
Thanks for your help on your web site, I was able to troubleshoot my glow
plug system and it works fine. I wanted to ask if you have any more repair tips
that you may have for the car or a repair manual that I can buy. Also, I am
going to work on my ac system since the mercedes I bought has a frozen
compressor. I was going to buy the synthetic oil that you recommended but wanted
to ask you something about it. I went to my local supply house and they tried to
talk me out of using synthetic. They stated that the synthetic is corrosive to
the older hoses and system and will cause damage. Is this correct? Also, since
the compressor was frozen and there is a potential for loose debris in the
system, should I replace the condensor. Is the condensor able to be flushed
effectively. The old owner stated his ac shop said the condensor needed to be
replaced.
Again, thanks for your help, wish you had more tips on your web site.
T. B.
Russell,
Wow, I had never know about your site. You do great guides! You're my
kinda guy. Somebody else pointed it out that in between our two sites,
there isn't really much more than a DIY could ask for. That's how I
found out about your site. If it's okay with you, .......
So yeah, cool.
thanks D.
Hey
there,
First of all, I want to say I appreciate your web site. I just bought a 1980
merc 240D. I have seen at least three of your articles that I will be following
along with to make repairs. Your sense of humor and excellent pictures make it
seem like I can really do this.
I am just down the road, in stone mountain/Clarkston area. I am definitely
interested in biodiesel for 1.80/gal. The only reason I bought this car was to
convert it to SVO/WVO. I would really like to have bio diesel in the main tank
instead of dinosaur bones. Especially if it is 1.80/gal. I have to repair a few
things first... wheel bearing, motor mounts, brake lines, valve adjust, rear dif
lube and so on, not too bad unless I planned on having a merc mechanic do it
all. Then I would be in trouble.
Do you have bio diesel now? Let me know, I didn’t find your site till last
night and I have been all over the place looking for sites like yours. I have
several friends that would make a habit of filling up with you if possible.
I also wanted to talk to you about my conversion to WVO. See what you
though about the components I am planning to use.
I will try to give you a call tomorrow.
Thanks again, hope I can fill up at your place.
B.
Russell,
Hate to be a spoil sport. I really like what you've done with the site
lately. Especially the part for sale section.
Thanks,
K.
Hi Russell:
I am happy I found your website.
I own three fine running Mercedes diesels:
'79 300D; '81 240D 4spd.; '84 300D Turbo.......I
hope to visit your shop next time I fly out to see the Auburn Tigers.
Thank you,
S. M.
Russel,
Hi, my name is Kevin Norris and I live in Talladega, AL. I've really
enjoyed your dieselgiant.com website and it has given me the confidence to start
looking for a MB diesel to run homebrew WVO biodiesel. I'm just getting started
on the biodiesel project...
Thanks again for the great site, it was just what I'm looking for. I'm on
the benzworld.org forums as KBlair asking these same questions.
Sincerely,
K. N.
Hi
Russell, great website! I enjoyed checking it out as im a diesel head of over 20
years. I have had many Mercedes diesels over the years but kept my 180D which im
working on these days. I have a 1984 Mazda B2200 diesel and a 2000 Golf TDI
which runs well when the MAFs arent going bad. I too run the Amsoil but in the
Golf only and use the 3000 series. I was wondering if you knew a source for a
new radiator for my B2200? The years are 1982-84 only. Im in CT and have found
none as they are mostly gone here from salt but was wondering if suppliers in
your area would have them listed? I may end up recoring it. Do you ever get any
Mazda diesels for sale? I used to have a Jeep CJ6 with a Perkins diesel and
shouldnt have sold it. Thanks again for your help. Regards. J.
Russel,
I just finished installing new vacuum valve levers per your instructions and it
made a BIG difference in the shifting quality of my 84 “Biobenz”
MB TDT with auto tranny. Thanks for posting the
procedure. I’m going to jump into a valve adjustment next.
Best regards,
K.
Hey Russell,
First off, Great Site!!!
When I returned from Iraq I bought a truck that I thought covored my needs
and some of my wants. Well 5 months later and I am wishing I had gone down a
different road. I bought a new Ram 1500 2wd with the Hemi. Don't get me wrong, I
love this truck, but it I would have been better off with a diesel. Now I am
looking to see if I can get what I owe for this truck and find a GREAT 4x4
diesel.
The maroon ram you have caught my eye, but I am a little worried about the
gooseneck hitch becouse those are not usually required untill you tow heavy a
lot. But you know better then me.
Also, have you hear of any problems with using the waste vegetable oil? I
am fairly familiar with the "cleaning" process, but have not heard any
testimonies.
Thank you for your time, Russell.
I look foward to hearing from you,
A. D.
Hi,
Your website is the best.
Thank you,
M.
Read your maintaince tips on the Jetta tdi. I am
getting a 97 passat tdi and would like to do similar
mods. How has the bypass filter worked out for you?
Which Trasko model # filter did you use, fram
reference on web site doesn't seem to match up with
what I have found. I plan to do purge before putting
it on the road. Thanks for tips
P.
I want to thank you for all the advice you provided me to find, fix and
repair my glow plug problem. Did the tests voltage and ohm, and found out i had
two defective plugs. Replaced them and then went to my parts supplier and they
gave me two new ones at no charge!

Russell - just wanted to drop you a note to say
thank you - I appreciate the time you took with the car! Looking forward
to working with you in the near future.
R.
thanks for the response. I figured there wasn't any difference in the lobe
position. Pointing the cam lobes to 12 o'clock was a LOT easier and quicker for
the adjustment.
thanks again for all the great pictorials!
Hey,
Russell,
I
like your website; very informative and appreciated.
My
car’s performance has never been good, and seems worse lately. I read
about cleaning the banjo bolt but can’t find it. Maybe my 603 doesn’t
have one?
Thanks
for any advice.

The pix and detailed tutorials you
offered made me less apprehensive about delving into this and I appreciate
the work you've out into your site. Good stuff.
Thanks.
Hi Russell,
I just bought a 1981 240D and am interested in getting
your valve adjustment wrench kit.
Thanks for those great free tutorials...that's a
nice service you offer everybody!
Thanks,
A. D.
Hello Russell,
I have purchased a slew of stuff from your website. It is awesome by
the way. I saw in one of your instructions to run a citrus flush through
the cooling system. I purchased the citrus flush but I am not sure how
to do it. I have a 1979 300SD and to put it in the radiator I would
either need to put it in the tank on the fender or remove the upper hose and
dump it in. What is the best way to do the citrus flush. If
you have a moment would you be so kind to e-mail
the instructions to me? I may be in the market for a Ford
Diesel truck in the near future. Do you have any on your lot?
Thanks,
C. M.
Hello
You have a great web site..glad I found it. Will be
ordering from you soon. I have a 87 SDL. turbo 6cyl it is quick
.... not a race car but not slow. I got the car for little over $4000.00
and it has 269,000 miles on it. I do not have any maintenace records on
it. Seems to have know problems. But I wanted to go through it
...things like filters gas filters etc. What all should I buy from you to give
me a since of peace about needed maintenance. I also want to know from
you if you think this is a good engine or canadate care to run Bio Diesel
. A friend wants me to go in half with him on a bio fuel
processor. Fuel cost will be less the a buck a
gallon... after the cost of the processor. Thanks
for you input.
M.
Hi Russell
Just wanted to let you know that my order arrived just fine and the
tumbler installed in a matter of minutes :-)
I'm am a happy camper, I really apreaciate your service and prices, you
will be hearing from me more as funds permit.
Thanks again
B. B.
Hello again Russell, I looked at the climate
control after you said to see if it would work on defrost and I found a
trace on the circuit board burnt in two. I turned it on and jumped it out
"the burnt trace " with a piece of wire and WALLA it run just
fine. Thanks for the help and thanks for the web site. I stumbled on it and it
is great!!!! There are several things on it I did not know and you make them
seem easy. I plan on ordering some parts soon. Thanks again.
S. and T. N.
Thanks
for such a great web site with all the “how-to” articles! I’m a shop
manual nut and also make “how-to” pages for Isuzu groups, so it’s
refreshing to find similar for my new diesel hobby.
Thanks
much,
J.

I just completed a purge on my 1984 MB 300d. Amazing effect. Most
interesting was the flecks of black soot that was in the old fuel
filter. Next time I will put a filter on both hoses (supply and return)
that go into the juice bottle, as the return fluid got it black ( very
black )....
Thanks for the great pics of how to do things.
K.
Hello,
I recently found your excellent site. I was wondering if I could ask a
quick question?
1983 300sd
re: main fuel filter
In trying to remove the old filter I have crushed it and twisted it but it
will not budge. Am I doing something wrong? Are they threaded backwards?
PS: please recomend what products to buy and change to help my
transmission not to shift so hard. It shifts very hard especially when cold.
Thanks
J.
Russell:
Great web site! I appreciate your pictorial
repair essays...
My 1985 300SD Turbo (126) with 201K miles is
in need of some help.
I've always done most maintenance...
Finally, I also want to do an injector
replacement and valve timing job.
Your pictorials have given me the courage to
tackle those jobs.
Thanks again for your feedback.
Regards,
D. M.
Russell,
I recently found your
page while doing a search for Mercedes 300 series and
also SVO and biodiesel. Not sure which site led me to
yours but I was glad to find it. I work on a farm for
three years and have some basic wrenching skills. Your
pages on Mercedes maintenance has proved to me that I
can handle those engines as well without much issue.
Thanks for a great page with excellent photos! Keep
up the good work. Glad there are still people out
there who want to help others with vehicle
maintenance.
A.
Greetings, I love your site! I recently purchased a 300D with what
appears to be a completely rebuild longblock and injection pump. It starts in
1/2 second at 40 degrees so I think it must truly be rebuilt (oh, and it
doesn't leak!). I've been tinkering on cars for years but this is my
first Mercedes and first diesel. I'm hooked!...
Thanks a bunch!
C.
Hello,
Great web-site! I'm hoping you can help me get some parts. I have a vacuum
leak. I can tell that the connection between the 4-way splitter and the yellow
check valve for the door-lock system is bad. Simple enough, I can see the parts
I need to order for that.....
Thanks,
B.
Mr. Russell,
I was amazed with the information and knowledge that I
just learned by just browsing through your website, Diesel Giant.I like your
website especially the illustrations, they are so informative.
I have a 1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel and I'm having
problems with the high water temperature especially when I'm in a slow, stop
and go trafficand driving uphill on a hot summer day even with the A/C
turned off. Water pump, clutch fan, belts, radiator and I think the
entire cooling system is all good except for this kind or driving
conditions.
I saw the modification that you did on the drilled thermostat
and I already thought about that but the problem is if i'm going to drill a
hole on my car's thermostat, I might have problems warming up my car during
the winter, and that's another problem with this car or is it just my
car, it is too slow to accelerate from dead-full stop especially when
the engine is cold. I could barely go up our driveway in the morning.
Now, my question is, do you happen to know what the real
standard temperature of the thermostat for this particular car? if the
standard is 80 deg. C, can I install a 75 deg. C thermostat and
will not hurt as bad as an engine running that is not on normal operating
temparature. and question #2, does the valve clearance has something to
do with the engine temperature going up sky high and the reason why my car
accelerates so slow??
Thanks T.
H Thanks for your time and your web page that
is A LOT of help. I just received the lever arms for the transmission and put
them on and man what a difference it made.
Thanks again S.
Hey Russ,
AWSOME!! i followed your step by step guide to repairing an odometer in
my mercedes and you were SPOT ON! its fixed and running.
I do have one question, when i replaced it everything was fine, however the
front interior dome light stopped working. is this a coincidence or is
it wired into somewhere on the panel.
its a 1982 mercedes td wagon running on wvo.
thanks
M.
Hello,
I just bought an 84 300D (after owning a 450SL and 280SE) and find your
site to be awesome. Thanks for posting all your great tutorials. I
will be back (hopefully not too much because that means I'm doing repairs).
Best, M.
that diesel purge, by the way, made a believer
out of me, i heard a strange noise halfway through the first can and
realized that the "noise" was my motor RUNNING! good, good,
stuff!
Hello,
Phenomenal website! Superb odometer pictorial. So realistic it scared
me out of doing it myself :-) Would you repair one shipped to you or
would it make more sense for me having it done locally?
Thanks for your reply
A.
Tthanks so much for the thermostat pictorial. I have a 1984 300D.
C. L.
Hi Mr. Russell , It's me again, if you still remember, the
overheating '85 300D TurboDiesel, I finally had a chance to work on my car
this weekend, and I did modified and drilled holes on my old
thermostat and put it in yesterday and drove around today for almost
half of the day and it works and runs smooth and fine and water temp. at 80
deg. C most of the time, fast or slow, stop and go, with A/C on. I even
re-installed back my old set of fan blade and clutch and still I can't
get the temp. gauge to go up. I really appreciate your wonderful idea and
advice a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks!
T.
Hello Russell -
First let me just say ... WOW! Man, am I glad I ran into your website! I
am new to Mercedes and new to diesel engines - just bought a 1985 300SD
from
a friend. You are providing a WONDERFUL service by having your tutorials
online - and building confidence for DIY-ers like me!
Thanks for your time, Russell, and for the GREAT website!!! You have
definately made a fan! I would love to see more of your repair tutorials!
B.
My wife purchased your Deluxe Diesel Purge Kit, and the valve adjustment
kit for me as a gift. I performed the purge and adjusted the valves
using your pictorials, and the difference in my 1980 300SD is
incredible. The car runs much smoother, starts in a heartbeat, and
doesn't smoke any longer.
Aside from the improvement in the car's performance, the feeling of
satisfaction from having been able to do this work on my own, is really
nice. Not only did I save money, but I have taken the liberty of
awarding myself a gold star for being a good boy, ha!
Thank you,
V. W.
Dear Russell,
I have enjoyed reading your pictorials on MBZ servicing projects in
the past, so I wonder if you could point me to a source where I can
look up the various measurements for my 1983 300 D Turbo's IP linkage.
Both my donor motor and dead motors must have undergone some serious
impact, because they're all out of whack......
The guys on the forum recommend replacing the Throttle Bushing:
R. C.
Hi,
Ok, I just completed a purge with your purge kit. Then I ordered your
Bosio injector nozzles. I installed them today. Your instructions were
very helpful!! However, I have a couple of questions.
First, when I removed the first injector, there was a small puddle of oil
in the injector cavity. It was also on the injector. Actually on all five,
exactly the same amount. Also there was some coking and small chunks in the
cavity. Is this normal? Do I need valve seals? Rings?
I got it all cleaned up, rebuilt the injectors and reinstalled them. It
works!!! It idles smoother but still smokes during
acceleration, black smoke. Is this normal?
What is the normal compression for a 1980 300TD with 143,000 miles?
Thanks for your time and great web pages and parts.
M. M.
THE BOSIO INJECTRS NOZZLES WERE A IMPROVEMENT IN FUEL MILEAGE 21 TO 26
IN FREEWAY DRIVING AND POWER AND DOWN SHIFTING WERE GREAT, IF POWER IS
GOOD TRANSMISSION SHIFTING IS GOOD ALSO.
THANKS R.
First off, great site, I used your power
steering pump cleaning tips, but found my screen spring was locked on with a
push nut, not a threaded nut. Decided to leave it be for now rather than
snap the stem or shatter the push nut and lose the pieces in the PS pump.
At least the fluid is cleaner now.
Anyway, here's my real question:
Thanks,
M.
Thanks. Did a valve adjustment (your wrenches) over the weekend that
made a world of differnce.
B.
Thanks for the hard work on putting your
tutorials together. The odometer fix worked! I recently purchased a 1985 300CDT
with 137,000 'easy' miles. I have been bit by the Benz bug and can't wait to use
your site to fix this car up. First jobs will be the purge and valve adjustment.
Thanks for the wrench kit. J.
Hi Russell,
I'm converting my MB to bio and have found your site VERY useful.
Thanks again, and thanks for the terrific website!!!! I'm new to this
Mercedes thing but I sure like the sense of community amongst the old
MB enthusiasts!
M.
Dear Russell,
I printed for myself your Bosio nozzle replacement
pictorial - great material. Thanks!
Thanks in advance,
D.
